Love Locks

On bench on Sæbraut Road in Reykjavík, Iceland

Random Monday thought.... what are love locks and why can they be found EVERWHERE???!!!

I just came back from Iceland and discovered that not even this northern remote island was able to escape the love lock. This image is actually from a bench as opposed to on a bridge, where they are more commonly found.

In an article from Matt Hershberger via the Matador network, Matt describes the origin of the locks in a remote town in Serbia. Of course it is a love story! You can read more about it here.

Unfortunately, love locks do not always have a good ending... for structures and nature! Back in June of 2014, part of the Pont des Arts bridge in Paris collapsed due to the weight of too many locks! Thankfully no person was hurt, but the chain-link fence and all the locks on it are now rusting away in the Seine River. The Pont des Arts, is not alone! Bridges from New York to Tokyo, Tel Aviv to Ottawa and even Mount Huang in China are struggling to keep visitors from sharing this love lock moment. Read on....

Although I am not promoting this in any way, it's interesting to note that you don't have to be cheap and snag a lock from your local dollar store. There are websites that sell personalized locks!

So the next time you are traveling, just keep an eye out. They are not hard to find---- and now you know why they are there!
